Biography

Dr. David Ryan, a consulting psychologist, has practiced, taught and researched in child and adolescent mental health, adult psychiatry, health psychology, interdisciplinary practice, and organizational behavior. He is Director of Education for the Regional Geriatric Program of Metropolitan Toronto (RGP), a distributed network of healthcare services for frail seniors, an Assistant Professor in the  U of T Faculty of Medicine, and a Director of Openflows Networks Ltd. At RGP, Dr. Ryan builds online knowledge-to-practice resources, including online teaching and learning resources to support the core competencies required for specialized geriatric service providers. He manages two distributed work groups, one of educators in psychogeriatrics, the other a team of nurses who are part of the Provincial Geriatric Emergency Management Project, and maintains a “standing watch’ on new technologies that will impact seniors’ lives. His research has included a technology-enabled community development project in Northern Ontario, the GeriPalm Project, and an examination of the ePresence webcasting utility for the continuing education of rural physicians. In the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ryan’s work focuses on the knowledge-to-practice process, and faculty development in the use of ICTs and interdisciplinary practice. In 2000 he won the Faculty’s Fred Fallis Award in Distance Education for a series of online teaching case studies in dementia care. He is co-investigator in a Knowledge Translation Program research project on colorectal cancer staging, and of a project examining the informal risk assessment scans of emergency measures personnel.  In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Ryan is a Director of Openflows Networks Ltd, a company that develops opensource software applications for clients as diverse as the CBC, Walrus Magazine, and USAToday.
