Biography
Professor Elsa Marziali obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Practice and Research in 1971 from Smith College School of Social Work. She holds the Norman and Honey Schipper Chair in Gerontological Social Work, the first chair in Canada to study aging through clinical research into social work involving older people and their families. It provides leadership for the Katz Centre in Gerontological Social Work at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care where Dr. Marziali is Director. The centre develops new approaches to care for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Dr. Marziali’s ongoing research interest is in the development and testing of computer/internet-based supportive interventions for family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's, stroke or Parkinson's disease. In addition she is developing and evaluating internet-based health support programs for patients with chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension and stroke. Her research is supported by CANARIE, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the American Alzheimer Association, and Bell Laboratories at the Uof T.
