Biography Dr. Zaheer Baber joined the UTM Department of Sociology in September 2005 after four years at the University of Saskatchewan where he was Canada Research Chair in Science, Technology and Social Change. He has also taught at the University of Victoria, the National University of Singapore, where he was nominated as the Best Researcher in the faculty, and was a Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Oriental Culture, University of Tokyo. Dr. Baber also holds a cross-appointment to KMDI. His principal research interest is Ihe internet and social activism in Asia. He is the author of The Science of Empire: Scientific Knowledge, Civilization and Colonial Rule in India (State University of New York Press, 1996; Oxford University Press, 1998), and editor of CyberAsia: The Internet and Society in Asia (Brill, 2005). He has contributed numerous articles and essays to scholarly journals and is currently Consulting Editor for the Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology and Associate Editor of Asian Journal of Social Science. Dr. Baber grew up in the university town of Allahabad, India. He has a B.Sc. (Hons) in Botany from Aligarh University, an M.A. and M.Phil. in Sociology from Delhi University and a Ph.D. in 1993 from the University of Toronto.
